The limited-edition Pontos Décentrique Phases de Lune is to receive the highest distinction at the red dot design awards, where it will be honored with the "best of the best" prize. The Masterpiece Régulateur Roue Carrée, also in a limited edition, will receive the "red dot" distinction. A total of 4,433 products were submitted. The outstanding and innovative designs of Maurice Lacroix have already made several big impressions at previous red dot design awards, one of the world's most prestigious international product competitions. As part of the red dot award: product design 2011, a top-class expert jury will be awarding the limited Pontos Décentrique Phases de Lune the "red dot – best of the best 2011" quality label, conferred on products with the most outstanding design quality. The equally limited Masterpiece Régulateur Roue Carrée is to receive the "red dot – winner 2011" prize. "Our judges have subjected the entries to extremely critical scrutiny. Design quality has always been central to the jury's decisions, with recognition also for genuinely new creative solutions. These two criteria are yardsticks not only of good design, but also of potential market success. Such potential is greatly enhanced by the targeted use of our prestigious design prize," said Professor Dr Peter Zec, initiator of the red dot design award. The model's forerunner, the Pontos Décentrique GMT, first launched back in 2006, had already won a red dot – best of the best award. The Pontos Décentrique Phases de Lune continues this move away from traditional views of classical watchmaking towards a unique and distinctive approach. A combination of courage and discipline characterized this watch, thus turning the very principles of modern architecture into a hallmark. Thanks to hot-forming technology, the multi-level dial is manufactured from a single piece. The hours are displayed on an off-center disc at 10 o'clock. Opposite this, at 4 o'clock, two overlapping discs show the phases of the moon, moon-age and day/night indicator. The date-display module at 6 o'clock, already filed for patent, is engraved on a disc driven by a special, internally developed power transmission system. The watch has an automatic mechanical movement enclosed in a 45 mm titanium case. Masterpiece Régulateur Roue Carrée – Squaring the Circle With the Masterpiece Régulateur Roue Carrée, the world of watchmaking enters a new dimension. This model, developed internally at Maurice Lacroix, has reinvented the wheel, with its hours hand set in a square toothed cog. The wheel is driven by a gear in the shape of a clover leaf and rotates at a constant speed around its own axis. The movement's main plate plays the role of the dial. This mechanism required lengthy development and a variety of calculations, simulations and tests. Since by definition the gear profiles for non-circular wheels cannot be regular, the principal difficulty lay in defining the shapes of the teeth to ensure constant power transmission. The gears were made using LIGA technology. A world première in the history of watchmaking and a masterful combination of technology, innovation and modern aesthetics. The red dot design award The red dot design award, whose origins date back to 1955, is now the largest and most prestigious design competition in the world. It is divided into three categories: "red dot award: product design", "red dot award: communication design" and "red dot award: design concept". 2010 alone saw some 14,000 entries from 68 countries. www.red-dot.de/presse. Since the launch of its first watch model in 1975, Maurice Lacroix has evolved to become a sought-after Manufacture brand. Thanks to continued innovative development in both technical fields and design, Maurice Lacroix has registered several patents and trademarks. Maurice Lacroix is one of the few independent watchmakers and employs more than 200 people worldwide, the majority of whom are based at the international head office in Zurich and the production facilities in Saignelégier and Montfaucon in Switzerland.
