Exhibition Fact Sheet Exhibition title: From Craft to Catwalk Tracking craft & culture in contemporary fashion Exhibition dates: January 20 - May 18, 2008 Curator: Debra Stevenson, President Trend Agitator (www.TrendAgitator.com) Tracking the influence of craft in contemporary fashion, this exhibition offers a glimpse of the design process as it is a reflection diverse cultural traditions and motifs. An African stone carving, a Mexican pottery shard, a Chinese water basket any form of folk motif, material, or pattern may serve as the exuberant inspiration for featured fashion designers. From Craft to Catwalk follows the journey of these traditional motifs from remote global villages to the trendy streets of Los Angeles. Presenting cutting-edge couture from local fashion innovators and the material inspirations of their work, this exhibit celebrates traditional craft and folk motifs through the lens of contemporary fashion. Loan agreements will be prepared by CAFAM and must be signed by Lender and returned prior to arrival of artwork to museum. 2. Artwork will be fully insured upon arrival to museum premises. (Lender must provide insurance values for all loaned objects.) 3. Shipment of artwork is to be arranged and paid for by lender. 4. CURATOR BIOGRAPHYDEBRA STEVENSONOver the last 20 years Debra Stevenson has traveled extensively documenting popular culture, tracing the origins of inspiration, and identifying the next hot trend for clients in the fashion industry. As the founding partner of The Skyline Studios, Debra provides creative direction for global giants and niche market brands. A passionate trend-tracker, she reports on style for leading forecasters and online publications including her own blog, Trend Agitator. In her executive role at Disney she conceived an outrageous Mercedes Benz Fashion Week debut for Alice in Wonderland, garnering international media buzz for the world's largest licensor. At Brighton Accessories she oversaw countless runway shows, VIP events in China, and thematic installations that delighted the company's loyal consumers. As an active tribal art collector, an ambassador for fair trade, and a lifelong fashion addict, Debra is honored to participate in this timely collaboration with the Craft and Folk Art Museum. The exhibition FROM CRAFT TO CATWALK will track the imprint of craft in contemporary fashion by showcasing cutting-edge couture from West Coast fashion innovators and the global craft and folk motifs that provide their inspiration. Born in sunny South Africa, Debra Stevenson was recognized by the Prince Charles Young Entrepreneurs Trust. She was named amongst Boston Magazine's 100 Interesting Women and featured on WBZ-tV's People Are Talking. Debra has appeared on Visiting with Huell Howser, The Rolanda Show, APTV and was recently quoted in Womens Wear Daily. Debra is an active seminar speaker, serves on the Board of Directors at the Los Angeles Art Association and chairs the Marketing Committee for Fashion Business Inc.
