Gadzooks, Inc. (Nasdaq: GADZ) announced Feb. 3rd 2004, that it filed for bankruptcy protection in the Northern District of Texas. This move was necessary in order to provide time to complete the reorganization of its core business around 252 stores chosen to strengthen its market position in the junior apparel business. In addition to 31 stores currently being liquidated, approximately 125 additional stores will be liquidated in the coming weeks. In addition to the store closings, approximately 65 corporate and field overhead positions will be eliminated to streamline the cost structure of the company.
Founded in 1983 by Jerry Szczepanski and Larry Titus, Dallas-based Gadzooks catered to both male and female customers prior to 2003. As of October 4, 2003, the Company operated 412 Gadzooks stores and 3 Orchid stores for a total of 415 stores in 41 states. The average Gadzooks store size is 2500 square feet, and the average Orchid store size is 1200 square feet. The Company also operates www.Gadzooks.com, an interactive web site for girls.
