What is going on in the world of fashion
design? Let's see what the fashion designers are up to by
reading news reports, social media, articles, and blog posts.
The goal of many fashion designers is to
design clothes which are functional as well as aesthetically pleasing.
However, people see clothing in a similar way as they see beauty.
What is pleasing is in the eye of the beholder. Each person
may have a different opinion in regard to what style, color, or
fabric, should be in style this season. The fashion designers
must consider who is likely to wear a garment and the situations
in which it will be worn. They have a wide range and combinations
of materials to work with and a wide range of colors, patterns and
styles to choose from. Their is much to consider when designing
a collection.
Fashion design is generally considered to
have started in the 19th century with Charles Frederick Worth who
was the first designer to have his label sewn into the garments
that he created. In todays world we know of thousands of popular
fashion designers and brands across the globe. Let's learn

Some clothes are made specifically for an
individual, as in the case of haute couture or bespoke tailoring.
Today, most clothing is designed for the mass market, especially
casual and every-day wear are called ready to wear. Fashion designers
work in different ways. Some sketch their ideas on paper, while
others drape fabric on a dress form. But they all have generally
similar goals. That is to create clothes, shoes, or fashion
accessories that will be enjoyed by consumers.

Here are a few terms that are important to understand when reading
some fashion designer news articles.
Ready-to-wear
clothes are a cross between haute couture and mass market. They
are not made for individual customers, but great care is taken in
the choice and cut of the fabric. Clothes are made in small quantities
to guarantee exclusivity, so they are rather expensive. Ready-to-wear
collections are usually presented by fashion houses each season
during a period known as Fashion Week.
Made to measure
(MTM or M2M) typically refers to clothing that is sewn from a standard-sized
base pattern. A tailored suit is a common example of a made-to-measure
garment. The fit of a made-to-measure garment is expected to be
superior to that of a ready-to-wear garment, because ready-to-wear
garments are constructed to fit the manufacturer's definition of
an average customer, while made-to-measure garments are constructed
to fit each customer individually. However, made-to-measure items
are seen by many to involve less workmanship than bespoke or "custom
made" garments, as made-to-measure garments always involve some
form of standardization in the patterning and manufacturing processes,
whereas a bespoke garment is made entirely from scratch based on
a customer's specifications.
Mass Market:
Currently the fashion industry relies more on mass market sales.
The mass market caters for a wide range of customers, producing
ready-to-wear garments using trends set by the famous names in fashion.
They often wait around a season to make sure a style is going to
catch on before producing their own versions of the original look.
In order to save money and time, they use cheaper fabrics and simpler
production techniques which can easily be done by machine.
Haute Couture:
Until the 1950s, fashion clothing was predominately designed and
manufactured on a made-to-measure or haute couture basis (French
for high-sewing), with each garment being created for a specific
client. A couture garment is made to order for an individual customer,
and is usually made from high-quality, expensive fabric, sewn with
extreme attention to detail and finish, often using time-consuming,
hand-executed techniques.
Fashion Week:
A fashion week is a fashion industry event, lasting approximately
one week, wherein fashion designers, brands or "houses" display
their latest collections in runway shows to buyers and the media.
These events influence trends for the current and upcoming seasons.
Luxury Goods:
luxury good is a good for which demand increases more than proportionally
as income rises, and is a contrast to a "necessity good", for which
demand increases proportionally less than income. Luxury goods
are often synonymous with superior goods.
Fashion Show:
A fashion show (French défilé de mode) is an event put on by a fashion
designer to showcase his or her upcoming line of clothing during
Fashion Week. Fashion shows debut every season, particularly the
Spring/summer and Fall/winter seasons. This is where the latest
fashion trends are made.
