The Barbados Blackbelly is believed to have a West African origin and was
first introduced into the Caribbean region in the 1500's. Early in the 20th
century, the Barbados Blackbelly was imported into the U.S. and later crossed
with other breed types such as the Mouflon, Rambouillet and other European
breeds. As a result, the U.S. Barbados Blackbelly possesses very distinct
traits from those located in the Caribbean region. The Barbados Blackbelly is
a hair breed that resists parasites, tolerates low-grade forage and breeds out
of season.
