Kimono style dresses come in a wide variety of fabrics, silhouettes, and colors.  In the United States, the retail market has many different types of dress that utilize styling that has some similarity to the traditional Japanese kimono.  However, they are two distinctly different garments.  The non-traditional dresses can have a kimono style collar or kimono style sleeve, but not be a true kimono.

A kimono is a long Japanese traditional dress which wraps around the body and has distinctively voluminous sleeves. It is tied around at the waist with the Obi belt. The elaborately tied Obi belt which could be as long as 12 feet or more is another distinguishing feature of the Kimono.
