Welcome
to the Woven Fabric website. This textile guide has
been designed to help members of the textile industry and
fashion industry learn more about Woven Fabric.
A
woven fabric is a cloth formed by the act
of weaving. Wovens only stretch in the bias
directions (between the
warp
and
weft
directions), unless the yarns are elastic. Woven
cloth typically frays at the edges, unless measures
are taken to counter this, such as the use of pinking
shears or hemming. Woven fabrics are manufactured
on a loom and made of many yarns woven on a warp
and a weft. In other words, the weaving
is the process of forming a fabric on a loom by interlacing
the warp (lengthwise yarns) and the filling (crosswise
yarns) with each other. The three basic weaves
are plain, twill, and satin. All other weaves,
no matter how intricate, employ one or more of these
basic weaves in their composition.
