What is a dress sandal?  No, it is not footwear designed in the shape of a dress.  A dress shoe is essentially a shoe to be worn to a somewhat dressy occasion such as smart casual or more formal events.  Footwear that can be work to a business setting or other event with some formality.  A dress shoe is typically contrasted to an athletic shoe.

Sandals are an open type of footwear, consisting of a sole held to the wearer's foot by straps going over the instep and, sometimes, around the ankle. Sandals can also have a heel. While the distinction between sandals and other types of footwear can sometimes be blurry the common understanding is that a sandal leaves all or most of the foot exposed.

Usually, people wear sandals in warmer climates or during warmer parts of the year in order to keep their feet cool and dry. We suggest that you do NOT wear them hiking in snow.

A sandal may have a sole made from rubber, leather, wood, tatami or rope (or other material). It may be held to the foot by a narrow thong that generally passes between the first and second toe, or by a strap, lace, etc., variously called a latchet, sabot strap or sandal, that passes over the arch of the foot or around the ankle.  A sandal may or may not have a heel (either low or high) or heel strap.

Rubber flip-flops that you would typically see at the beach or at a pool would not be considered dress sandals.
