Bamboo textiles are cloth, yarn, and clothing made out of bamboo fibers. in recent years a range of technologies have been developed allowing bamboo fiber to be used in a wide range of textile and fashion applications. Modern clothing labeled bamboo is often actually rayon. Mechanically processed bamboo is actually proper bamboo fabric, which has benefits for underwear.
There are two ways of commercially processing the bamboo plant to create yarn and fabric. The first is a mechanical process, creating what is informally called bamboo linen, and the second, more popular approach, is the chemical process used for producing rayon or viscose fabric.
Bamboo kun is a substance found in bamboo that is antimicrobial. But it was argued that because the bamboo rayon process was so chemically intensive, that there was no way that any trace of bamboo kun could be found in bamboo textiles after manufacturing.
When processed into fiber or yarn mechanically-processed bamboo requires no chemicals harmful to workers or the environment and maintains its inherently anti-bacterial properties. Environmentally friendly, bamboo-based fabrics have a luxurious softness often compared with cashmere.
Using the mechanically-processed approach is beneficial for underwear because it maintains the fabrics antimicrobial benefits.
