Nightwear – also called sleepwear, nightclothes, or nightdress – is clothing
designed to be worn while sleeping. The style of nightwear worn may vary
with the seasons, with warmer styles being worn in colder conditions and
vice versa. Some styles or materials are selected to be visually appealing
or erotic in addition to their functional purposes.
Animal print sleepwear are made to resemble the pattern of the skin and
fur of an animal such as a leopard, cheetah, zebra, tiger, spotted hyena,
striped hyena, giraffe, or other animal.
Sleepwear for women includes the following primary categories.
All of which can be designed with animal print patterns.
- Babydoll - A babydoll is a short, sometimes sleeveless, loose-fitting
nightgown or negligee intended as nightwear for women. It sometimes
has formed cups called a bralette for cleavage with an attached, loose-fitting
skirt falling in length usually between the belly button and upper thigh.
The garment is often trimmed with lace, ruffles, appliques, marabou,
bows, and ribbons, optionally with spaghetti straps.
- Chemise - A modern chemise is generally a woman's garment that vaguely
resembles the older shirts but is typically more delicate, and usually
more revealing. Most commonly the term refers to a loose-fitting, sleeveless
undergarment or type of lingerie which is unfitted at the waist. It
can also refer to a short, sleeveless dress that hangs straight from
the shoulders and fits loosely at the waist. A chemise typically does
not have any buttons or other fasteners and is put on by either dropping
it over the head or stepping into it and lifting it up. As lingerie,
a chemise is similar to a babydoll, which is also a short, loose-fitting,
sleeveless garment. Typically, though, babydolls are looser fitting
at the hips.
- Negligee - The negligee or négligée, from the French: négligé, literally
meaning "neglected", known in French as déshabillé, is a form of see-through
clothing for women consisting of a sheer usually long dressing gown.
It is a form of nightgown intended for wear at night and in the bedroom.
Modern negligees are often much looser and made of sheer and diaphanous
fabrics and trimmed with lace or other fine material, and bows. Multiple
layers of fabric are often used.
- Nightgown - A nightgown, nightie or nightdress is a loosely hanging
item of nightwear, today almost exclusively worn by women. A nightgown
is made from cotton, silk, satin, or nylon and may be decorated with
lace appliqués or embroidery at the bust and hem.
- Nightshirt - A nightshirt is a garment intended for wear while sleeping.
It is longer than most regular shirts, reaching down to the thighs or
below the knees, leaving some of the legs uncovered. It is generally
loose-fitting to avoid restricting the wearer's movement while sleeping.
- Pajamas - Pajamas are loose-fitting garments derived from the original
garment and worn chiefly for sleeping, but sometimes also for lounging.
Contemporary pajamas are derived from traditional pajamas. There are
many variations in style such as short sleeve pajamas, pajama bottoms
of varying length, or, on occasion, one-piece pajamas. Animal
print pajamas are a popular pattern.
- Peignoir - A peignoir is a long outer garment for women which is
frequently sheer and made of chiffon or another translucent fabric.
The word comes from French peigner, to comb the hair describing a garment
worn while brushing one's hair, originally referring to a dressing gown
or bathrobe.
- Sleep shirts - a long or short sleep top that can be worn to sleep.
- Sleep Pants - a long or short pant that can be worn to sleep.
Other types of garment are commonly worn for sleeping and can be patterned
to represent animal fur, including t-shirts, tank tops, sweatpants and gym
shorts as well as underwear.
