The idea of The North Face brand originated after a hiking trip on the Eagle Mountain in Minnesota. The north face of a mountain in the northern hemisphere is generally the coldest, iciest and most formidable route to climb.

A mountain isn't perfectly round or symmetrical, but is usually divided into more-or-less identifiable "sides" separated from each others by certain distinguishing features like ridges, ravines and such.
