Gadzooks, Inc. (Nasdaq: GADZ) reported a net loss of $4.1 million for the first quarter ended May 3, 2003 as the Company continues its transition to a juniors-only store. The Company recorded net income of $1.8 million for the first quarter of fiscal 2002. On a diluted basis, the Company reported a net loss per share of $0.45 for the quarter compared to net income of $0.19 per share for the corresponding period a year ago. Net sales for the quarter decreased 9.7 percent to $70.7 million from $78.3 million a year ago. Same store sales for the quarter declined 10.6 percent compared to a 2.2 percent decrease for the first quarter of last year. The Company also reported that month-to-date same store sales for fiscal May are up about 8 percent, driven by the ongoing liquidation of all men's inventories and increasing levels of junior merchandise. "We are excited about the progress that has been made so far in our conversion to a juniors-only store," said Jerry Szczepanski, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. "While many tasks remain, we have completed a tremendous amount of work thus far and we believe the project is definitely on schedule."
