The Spiegel Group (Spiegel, Inc.) reported net sales of $129.5 million for the four weeks ended October 25, 2003, a 25 percent decrease from net sales of $171.9 million for the four weeks ended October 26, 2002.
For the 43 weeks ended October 25, 2003, net sales declined 23 percent to $1.319 billion from $1.715 billion in the same period last year.
Comparable-store sales for the company's Eddie Bauer division decreased 6 percent for the four weeks and the 43 weeks ended October 25, 2003, compared to the respective periods last year. Unseasonably warm weather adversely impacted Eddie Bauer's retail sales in October when Eddie Bauer experienced a drop in store traffic and lower demand for winter apparel. Eddie Bauer continues to see strong customer response to its women's apparel offer.
The Group's net sales from retail and outlet stores fell 18 percent for the month compared to October of last year, reflecting the negative impact of store closings and the decline in Eddie Bauer's comparable-store sales. The company has reduced its store base by 18 percent, operating 468 stores at the end of October 2003 compared to 572 stores at the end of October 2002. Most of the store closings resulted from actions taken as part of the company's ongoing reorganization process.
Direct net sales (catalog and e-commerce) for the Group decreased 31 percent for the month compared to last year, primarily due to lower customer demand and a planned reduction in catalog circulation.
