SEVELEN, SWITZERLAND and WINSTON SALEM, N.C., – FRISBY TECHNOLOGIES INC. (NASDAQ – FRIZ), today announced that its partner, Schoeller Textil, AG, has developed a new fabric for use in the bedding industry that has been determined in testing conducted by a distinguished international research institute to provide a more restful night’s sleep. Schoeller partnered with another Swiss-based company, BSS Thermo-Bettwaren, AG, an innovative manufacturer of premium sleepware.
Frisby also announced that BSS is featuring this new fabric in its 2002 ThermoBalance® product line, which includes a down comforter, mattress cover and luxurious pillows in a range of warmth categories. BSS has exclusive rights to the use of the fabric in certain markets within Switzerland and Germany.
The schoeller®-COMFORTEMP® fabric is exclusively distributed in Europe by Schoeller Frisby Technologies GmbH, a joint venture between Frisby and Schoeller Textil. All schoeller®-COMFORTEMP® fabrics contain Frisby’s Thermasorb® thermal additive, a powder-like substance that automatically absorbs, stores and releases heat as required to maintain a balanced temperature.
The internationally renowned EMPA (Swiss Institute for Materials Testing and Research), in St. Gallen, Switzerland compared identical comforters with and without schoeller®-COMFORTEMP® fabric. The tests concluded that the active temperature-balancing provided by schoeller®-COMFORTEMP® fabrics noticeably reduced body movements during sleep and controlled the temperature within the bed’s sleep zone to between 26 and 28 °C (79 – 82 °F).
Commenting on the new fabric development, Hans-Jurgen Hubner, chief executive officer of Schoeller Textil, said, "This was a very interesting and complex design challenge and I am quite pleased with the results. We started this development with the goal to create a temperature-balancing fabric that would provide noticeable and appreciable benefit to the consumer and these tests indicate that we have achieved our goal."
Ueli Wehrli, chief executive officer of BSS Thermo-Bettwaren, added, "With schoeller®-COMFORTEMP® fabrics, we have created a new category of personally balanced sleep-ware products that interact with your body’s changing temperature needs. The notion that you can get a better night’s sleep by using this new generation of comforters is revolutionary and, so far, the market acceptance of this product has been better than we could have expected. We are excited that BSS is at the forefront of innovation in the bedding industry."
Greg Frisby, chairman and chief executive officer of Frisby Technologies, added, "This is the type of innovation we have come to expect from Schoeller and reflects our shared commitment to remain the leaders in phase change thermal management materials. Schoeller-Frisby has just begun commercial sale of the fabric and we expect this product to have a positive effect on Frisby’s European business in 2002 and beyond."
